Support for Education Professionals

We are able to support and help teachers and educational support staff in supporting and positively including children and young people with Down’s syndrome in their nursery or school.

We provide CPD-accredited training, support and information to nurseries and schools in all 32 local authorities across Scotland.

We have previously supported Educational professionals on a variety of topics including;

  • IEP Targets
  • classroom support strategies
  • literacy and numeracy
  • Transitions planning
  • Positive behaviour management
  • Friendships and Relationships
  • Puberty

As part of our work, we have attended meetings to help transition process through education as well as annual reviews, IEP or CSP reviews.

We work jointly with a large variety of professionals supporting children or young people with Down’s syndrome, providing information, strategies, and support, although not direct support to the child or young person.

Our service can support you so if you have a query, please contact the Family Support Service team at familysupportservice@dsscotland.org.uk or give us a call on 0300 030 2121.

Benefits of speaking to our Family Support Service

Support for Learning Leader, at a High School said:

We found Down’s Syndrome Scotland’s Family Support Service (FSS) input invaluable. They provided training and attendance at Young Person’s Planning Meetings during the transition process. Before we contacted DS Scotland, our main concerns were providing appropriately adapted materials to our pupil with Down’s syndrome and the pupil’s risk of becoming socially isolated. The Family Support Service put us in touch with two other mainstream schools who had success with this issue. The Family Support Service reassured us that with this case, the parents’ main priority was for their daughter to experience a mainstream secondary school. DS Scotland’s training is useful as it addresses concerns schools have such as how best to support a pupil with Down’s syndrome so that they achieve academically.”

We also offer training for Education Professionals. You can find out more about these training sessions and the dates of our upcoming session at the link below.
