Mind Your Language
This Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week (17th – 24th March) join us in shining the spotlight on the use of negative or inappropriate language towards people with Down’s syndrome. Our campaign ‘Mind Your Language’ aims to encourage everyone to see that words matter and to think twice before using words that may be offensive to people.
Support Down's Syndrome Scotland to combat the use of inappropriate language
We work hard towards challenging the use of inappropriate language and combating negative stereotypes. We can only do this with your support, please donate today to support our vital work.
Mind your language
We know that many negative terms and expressions to describe people with Down’s syndrome as still alarmingly common place in today’s society. Words like ‘retard’, ‘Mongol’ and ‘Down’s’.
We worked with four amazing adults with Down’s syndrome to create this powerful short video. The aim of the video is to highlight that words matter and ask people directly to ‘Mind their Language’ – or as Theresa puts it. “think about what you’re saying”.
We hope through spreading this video far and wide people from every level of society will see that the words they use matter and that maybe they will Mind Their Language!
Behind the Campaign – Why do words matter?
Earlier this year we asked our membership to tell us about the experience they have had of people using inappropriate or offensive language. We wanted to find out how many of our members had experience of negative language and the effect it had on them. We had 165 responses and we were shocked that the use of words such as Mongol seem to still be so frequently used in society today;
40% had experienced language they found inappropriate from professionals
57% had experienced language they found inappropriate from people in their community
39% had seen or heard inappropriate language in the media
The ‘Mind your Language’ campaign will share the message about the power of words and the negative impact of inappropriate language. You can find our full report on our findings here.
How can you help us beat the use of inappropriate language?
You can help us fight the use of inappropriate and offensive language in several ways. If you have a Facebook page, visit ours and share our video. We have also put together several resources which you can download here and share in your community to help spread the message and encourage others to ‘Mind their Language’!
