Supporting a Child with Down’s syndrome in your school with Learning Literacy & Numeracy and Positive Behaviour.
This 4 hour course will give delegates an understanding of what Down’s syndrome (Ds) is, associated features, health issues and their development as well as their unique learning profile. It will explain why elements of learning are particularly difficult and how to teach reading and numeracy to children with Down’s syndrome.
You will gain an understanding of the whole word approach and explore strategies using this approach to teach reading and the importance of teaching reading and its impact on ‘talking’. We will also look at the key learning principles and effective teaching strategies that can support teaching numeracy to children with Ds.
You will have the opportunity to consider strategies to support inclusion and tailor learning to meet the specific needs of a child with Down’s syndrome. This session also teaches about taking a functional and positive approach to behaviour management, looks at what causes difficult behaviour, and the relevance of communication and visual supports.
