How parents are told their baby has Down's syndrome is very important. Medical professionals need to take a sensitive, compassionate approach, taking their lead from the parents. In lots of cases this does happen, however many of our members told us that the way in which they were told was very negative and had a profound and lasting effect on them.
Our Breaking the News DVD films a few families talking about how they were told and how it made them feel. For some people having a baby with Down's syndrome is upsetting, but for others it makes no difference to them; it's important that medical professionals try to distinguish these different reactions and deliver the news accordingly.
