Screening and testing for Down's syndrome

Press release May 2002

As part of Down's Syndrome Awareness Week Define Down's syndrome Awareness Week  from 3-9 June 2002, Down's Syndrome Scotland are launching a new booklet looking at screening and testing during pregnancy and also a general awareness raising poster. The booklet explains medical terms and procedures and takes the reader through some of the complex issues.

It respects every parent's right to make their own choice but does not endorse the termination of pregnancy on the basis that the baby may have Down's syndrome Define Down's syndrome .

Karen Watchman, Director of Down's Syndrome Scotland, said:

Screening is a very emotional issue, yet it cannot give a definite answer as to whether a baby has Down's syndrome or not. Some parents do not find out until their baby is born, whilst others find out before the birth and continue with their pregnancy secure in the knowledge that their baby has Down's syndrome.
