To mark Down's Syndrome Awareness Week and the first UN-recognised World Down's Syndrome Day on 21 March, Down's Syndrome Scotland will be holding its 3rd annual 'Do a Dish for Down's syndrome' campaign during it's 30th anniversary.

Do a Dish at home/community:

Invite your friends and family members for a home cooked meal that you made or helped make! Or plan a coffee morning with friends and members of the local community!Ask your guests for donations to Down's Syndrome Scotland.

Raise even more awareness by selling or handing out our Down's Syndrome Awareness pins to your friends and family!

Do a Dish at work:

Ask your colleagues to bring a dish into work one day during March or specifically during Down's Syndrome Awareness Week (19 - 25 March)! Each colleague donates money towards Down's Syndrome Scotland on the day. Also make sure you bring plenty of our 9 Facts about Down's Syndrome so you can spread the awareness!

Raise even more awareness by selling or handing out our Down's Syndrome Awareness pins to your colleagues!

Do a Dish at school:

Ask you child's school to plan a cake bake or bake sale for Down's Syndrome Awareness Week (19 - 25 March) with all proceeds going to Down's Syndrome Scotland. Teachers can also talk with students about inclusion and the 9 Facts about Down's syndrome. Helpful flyers are available here.

Raise even more awareness by selling or handing out our Down's Syndrome Awareness pins!

Do a Dish at your local hairdresser:

Calling all women (or men!). We want to bring more awareness of Down's syndrome to women. We want to spread the facts about Down's syndrome. We're asking you to ask your hairdresser if they will be willing to have a Do a Dish event one or more days during Down's Syndrome Awareness Week!

This could be bringing in tray bakes, biscuits, cakes or sweets for their clients. We would ask hairdressers to ask for a donation to Down's Syndrome Scotland for the sweets. We also ask that hairdressers put up our 9 Facts about Down's Syndrome in every mirror of the shop. This way every client is made aware!

If your hairdresser would like to hold a Do a Dish event, e-mail Heather with your hairdresser's postal address and we'll send them their fundraising pack!

Why Do a Dish?

The idea behind the campaign is that people will host various events inviting friend, family and co-workers to share some good food and raise much needed funds for the charity. The events and dishes can be any size; from a few friends sharing some chips and dips while watching a movie to a large scale community event where everyone brings a dish. It is then hoped that some people who attend one event will go on to organise their own and so on.

The event promotes inclusion of family, friends and co-workers. Sharing food with others allows everyone to experience inclusion among family, friends and the community.

What our supporters planned last year:

Last year our fantastic fundraisers held barbeques, Sunday lunches, cake baking and dinner parties. Many of our members with Down's syndrome took this challenge head on and really got involved in raising money for the charity.

We also had some schools take part organising cake sales and special assemblies. They did a fantastic job raising money and we're sure they had a lot of fun as well. Through united efforts we raised over £4,500!
