ABC Group Announcement
The coordination and delivery of the Edinburgh and Lothian’s ABC groups will now be managed by Down’s Syndrome Scotland’s Family Support Service. This has been done in consultation and full agreement of the Edinburgh and Lothian’s parents committee that previously managed this service as well as Sue Wilson the lead Speech and Language Therapist involved in creating the groups. We were delighted with our recent recruitment round and have successfully appointed two co workers Alison Kirkpatrick and Maureen Browne who have both completed two days training with Symbol UK and have a follow up day booked in November.
Parents of the groups had the opportunity to meet the new workers at the recent parents meeting and they have been shadowing Sue for the last couple of weeks. Any parents who have not yet met them can do so after the holiday break. Sue will continue to be involved with the groups - setting the activities and reviewing the children’s progress alongside setting new targets and being the supervising Speech and Language Therapist. Sarah VP will be involved in managing the service and will be popping along to visit the groups and will be involved in this year’s annual audit.
This is a time of transition for the groups - for the children and parents as well as the staff. We would ask parents to please share with us any of their thoughts, opinions and feedback so that we can continue to deliver a high quality service.
We hope this is an exciting development that will allow us to pilot the new model whilst we continue to try and identify funds to secure the service for the longer term. We hope these funds will allow us to offer this service to families and children across Scotland.
