Adolescence
Young people with Down's syndrome experience the changes associated with puberty at around the same time, and in the same order, as other boys and girls.
Dealing with the physical and emotional changes can be difficult and it is important that young people are given appropriate information and an explanation about why these changes are happening to their bodies.
This can also be the time that young people start to realise how Down's syndrome affects them. Plenty of reassurance and positive reinforcement is vital to ensure that they remain confident and self-assured young people.
Young people need opportunities to increase their independence by spending time away from their parents, learning new skills and being encouraged to make their own choices.
