Secondary School

This section of the website provides information for parents of children aged 12-17.

Secondary school is one of the key transitional stages in the majority of young people’s lives. Parents of children with Down’s syndrome can sometimes comment that this is one of the most difficult periods for them - their child is growing up!

Young people with Down’s syndrome have a right to be educated within a mainstream secondary school alongside their peers that have known them throughout primary school years.

This is the stage where young people with Down’s syndrome become more aware of their own sexuality and like any other young person begin to take more of an interest in the opposite sex.

It is important that during these years of development that young people with Down’s syndrome are encouraged to become more independent in preparation for adulthood.
